At Poderi Borselli, sustainability is a daily commitment, a way of working the land with respect and awareness. We farm using organic methods, recover what nature provides us and invest in renewable energy to keep the impact of our activities as low as possible.

We believe in an agriculture that generates value without consuming resources, safeguarding the land and giving back what it offers us every day.

ENERGY, RESOURCES AND A VIRTUOUS MATERIAL CYCLE

Our philosophy is rooted in respect for the land and the goal of farming organically, keeping environmental impact to a minimum. Every production choice is guided by the idea that nature is an ecosystem to be protected, not a resource to be exploited.

For our energy needs we use systems that make the most of what our activities generate: the recovery of by-products, energy produced by the photovoltaic system and a biomass boiler fuelled by the olive husk obtained from the mill’s pomace. This approach allows us to maintain an environmental impact close to zero, saving approximately 150 quintals of CO₂ per year.

The vegetation water and pomace resulting from the oil production cycle of our mill are sent to a biogas plant (in the province) which, through fermentation, produces electricity — completing a virtuous cycle that makes the most of every resource.

AGRONOMIC MANAGEMENT AND REGENERATIVE PRACTICES

We apply water-saving methods and essential treatments on our vineyards and olive groves, using exclusively products permitted in organic farming and techniques inspired by biodynamics. Pruning is aimed at the wellbeing of the plant, with minimal intervention and reduced wounds, while the soil is often left with ground cover to improve soil structure and limit erosion.

To revitalise the soil we use green manure practices and are developing an internal composting system based on farm waste, so as to return to the soil what the land offers us.

These techniques allow us to maintain a natural balance, promoting soil vitality and plant resilience.

RENEWABLE ENERGY AND COMMUNITY COMMITMENT

The 20 kW photovoltaic system allows us to process our olives and those of local producers without relying on fossil fuels. During the mill’s inactive period, the energy produced is fed into the grid, contributing to the spread of clean, renewable energy.

Since 2009 we have been part of the Renewable Energy Food Community promoted by Slow Food, which brings together businesses committed to producing using exclusively renewable sources. We remain to this day the only reality that combines photovoltaics and biomass in the production of oil and wine — a model we share through guided tours of our facilities and estate. We regularly welcome groups of students and researchers from around the world who are interested in seeing at first hand an agricultural system that integrates quality, innovation and respect for the environment.

Over the years, this commitment has allowed us to stand out for the quality of our products and for our sustainability practices, recognised and awarded on multiple occasions, consolidating for the estate a prestigious role in the world of organic farming.

In our work we apply agronomic practices inspired by biodynamic principles, promoting techniques that enhance soil vitality and plant balance, such as green manuring, green pruning, animal-drawn cultivation, use of farmyard manure, wood chip, and treatments based on algae, copper and sulphur.
